Blog 8 - Exploratory writing for wikipedia post

After making an account on Wikipedia and searching many different topics, I have become the most intersted in the effectiveness of technology with special needs children. I found a Wikipedia entry, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assistive_technology, which I am interested in editing for my wikipedia assignment. The entry discusses a limited amount of ways it has effected children with special needs and I can add more to that topic.

There is also another wikipedia entry, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lekotek, which discusses briefly the concept of Lekotek. Lekotek is a program to provide assistive technology, toys, and expertise to disabled children. This entry is very short and I think I can contribute much more information to this entry.

A few other wikipedia entries I discovered related to my topic that I could possibly contribute to are as follows:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disabled_Children's_Computer_Group
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matching_Person_&_Technology_Model
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloorview_MacMillan_Children's_Centre

http://www.lekotek.org/ is the official website for the Lekotek company, which provides useful information about that topic. http://www.e-bility.com/arata/sigs_hpt_mpt.php is another website that involves the topic about Matching Person and Technology.

Overall, I believe my main goal for my wikipedia assignment is to contribute to a website that involves assistive technology and special needs children or different organizations that promote this theme.

I am considering doing this topic or the one about second life/griefers.

Blog 7 - Flashmobs Response

I was completely amazed when we discussed the topic on "flashmobs." It was extremely interesting to me how such a large amount of people come together to perform a certain task at a specific time. The people that participate in these events are usually dedicated to a common interest and are connected through several people.

When thinking about what in the world of print might correspond to the communications that underpin flashmobs, newspaper announcements and letters are what come to my mind. In order to communicate an idea through print to numerous people, one may post an announcement in a newspaper or send a letter to every person. However, the term "print" has changed its meaning in several ways.

Print no longer is specified to a written document. Forms of print are now influenced through text messaging, emails, chain letters, and ect. Digital communications have enhanced the ways people can announce certain information to people. Instead of writing a letter or posting a news article, which can take a day or two, people can send information to one another in a matter of seconds.

In the case of flashmobs, a person can text detailed information to others dealing with location, time, and action, with a few clicks of a button. Also, the information can be sent to several people at a single time. Digital technologies allow people to give information faster and to a greater number of people. For example, with a cell phone and a contact list you can send a message to everyone in your phone, followed by all of those people sending the same information to everyone on their contact list. It is incredible how fast information leaks in a matter of seconds! Also, digital technologies give people the advantage to respond to one another right away. Therefore, if people are choosing to participate in a certain flashmob or not, they can give that information to other people.

Now that there is such a large number of digital technologies, people are able to send pictures of how the flashmob location looks, due to camera phones. People can record the flashmobs taking place by using their cell phones or digital camera and have the event posted on youtube a few minutes later.

In the future, the number of flashmobs participants can possibly grow and lead to a flashmob taking place not only in one specific area, but in many areas as well. I wonder if there will be the same flashmob taking place at the exact time in different cities, states, or maybe even countries!

Blog 6 - Final literacy + technology narrative

The changes in literacy from print formats to digitalized formats have allowed me to grow as a writer in both educational and social ways. As a dedicated writer, I take advantage of both the digital and print world to enhance my writing skills, social communication, and hobbies, while keeping it on a personal level. I began to use technology more often when I entered Kean University.

My development as a literate participant in the 21st century culture of technology was shaped through my education and peers, while using my family's values. Once I became familiar with different types of technologies and digital literacies, my parents followed in my footsteps. They use the Internet to pay bills online, communicate through e-mail, and some of my family has even become familiar with using Facebook. My wariness about being completely open with the Internet and other groups is a result of my family's customs. They enjoy using various technologies, but they hold back in areas they do not feel completely comfortable with. My family and I enjoy keeping our personalized space.

Also, my family and I do not keep written journals. I believe this is what effects my openness to writing blogs or personal information on social networking websites. If I did keep a written journal, I wouldn't feel comfortable writing my thoughts online.

Throughout my early childhood, middle, and high school years, print formats were the main source of participating in class work and homework. I began to use the computer when teachers assigned papers to write, which mainly started in high school. I received my first cell phone in seventh grade, but my communication with others was still based on face to face conversations, talking on a land line, or sometimes AOL Instant Messenger.

In my Fall of 2006 semester at Kean University, I enrolled in a college composition class. The class was in a computer lab, which required classwork to be typed on the computer, as well as homework. During this class, I met two friends that introduced me very well to Facebook and showed me the benefits of it. They taught me how to use it to my advantage and the fun I could have with it. It allowed me to gain a numerous amount of friends throughout my college experience. The college composition class caused me to become more comfortable with using social networking and enhancing my writing skills on the computer.

I enjoy using Facebook to keep in touch with my friends and share photographs as well as information about myself. Although, I prefer not to give many details about my personal life on websites or through e-mails. In some cases, I feel more comfortable with gaining personal bonds with people once I get to know them better.

When it comes to educational means of writing, I perform more efficiently in writing research papers, creative writing papers, and essays, by using Microsoft Word on the computer. I am able to make my ideas clear and discover the best words to get my thoughts across. However, I prefer to write my ideas on paper, while I am brainstorming. In this case, the importance of printing is still meaningful to me.

I enjoy print literacy to prepare me before I begin writing a paper. In my senior year of high school, I took an AP English class. My teacher promoted the concept of writing ideas on paper before typing the final product. I participated in typing several papers, while brainstorming in print beforehand. My AP English teacher influenced me to use this technique frequently.

The same idea of benefiting from technology in a limited manner is also used when communicating with educators. When I communicate with teachers and professors outside of the classroom, I believe e-mail is a great source. However, there are also times that I like to meet with my educator one on one to receive the best and most efficient information about a certain situation or dilemma. For example, when I was absent from a class a few weeks ago, I met with the professor at her office to hand in missed assigments and become informed with feedback dealing with the previous and following class.

Both print and digital literacies are important in my life. I believe that it is effective to take advantage of both literacies and use them throughout life. Print literacy is more personal and confidential, but technology helps to improve writing skills and growth as a writer. Also, I have always and still do enjoy using technology for personal entertainment purposes such as photograph editing, designing, and downloading music. Throughout my education and with the help of my peers, I have developed as an active participant in the 21st century digital culture. My family shows various similar ideas about using technology. Technology has enhanced my literacy practices and allowed me to understand my values about my preferences in educational writing and networking. I will continue to use technology in education and social communication while keeping my print literacy values in mind.

Blog 5 - Exploratory writing for wikipedia project/hypertext essay

These are some topics I am interested in learning more about in respect to the internet, digital literacies, and other different groups.

- The effect of technology on children with special needs.
- How the use of texting and social communication websites have effected the way students write.
- Online job applications: More or less effective than written applications.
- Web designing.
- The change from classroom courses to online courses in college.
- Digital art in education.

I am mostly interested in topics that are in relation to my major, which is Early Childhood Education and English. However, I would also like to do research on a topic that is new to me and I do not know much about. I think it will be educational for me to broaden my horizon and fill my mind with new knowledge. If there are any suggestions, I will accept a topic that I could learn a lot about.

Blog 4 - Post Draft Literacy and Technology Narrative

The changes in literacy from print formats to digitalized formats have allowed me to grow as a writer in both educational and social ways. As a dedicated writer, I take advantage of both the digital and print world to enhance my writing skills, social communication, and hobbies, while keeping it on a personal level. I began to use technology more often when I entered Kean University. Beginning my freshman year at Kean University, I became more familiar and comfortable with digital ways of accomplishing tasks.

Throughout my early childhood, middle, and high school years, print formats were the main source of participating in class work and homework. I began to use the computer when teachers assigned papers to write, which mainly started in high school. I received my first cell phone in seventh grade, but my communication with others was still based on face to face conversations, talking on a landline, or sometimes AOL Instant Messenger.

Digitalized ways of social communication did not become extremely popular for me until my first year in college. My freshman year is when I gained great use out of using Myspace, Facebook, and school e-mail. It became required to have all assigments typed and professors gave students their e-mails for any needed assistance. Before this took place, communication with teachers was merely performed by handwritten notes. Currently, I benefit greatly from being a part of the digital world, but I still keep some of my values about print with me.

The same idea of benefiting from technology in a limited manner is also used when communicating with friends and educators. I enjoy using Facebook to keep in touch with my friends and share photographs as well as information about myself. Although, I prefer not to give many details about my personal life on websites or through e-mails. In some cases, I feel more comfortable with gaining personal bonds with people once I get to know them better.

When I communicate with teachers and professors outside of the classroom, I believe e-mail is a great source. There are also times that I like to meet with my educator one on one to receive the best and correct information about a certain situation or dilemma.

Both print and digital literacies are important in my life. I believe that it is effective to take advantage of both literacies and use them throughout life. Print literacy is more personal and confidential, but technology helps to improve writing skills and growth as a writer. Also, I have always and still do enjoy using technology for personal entertainment purposes such as photograph editing, desiging, and downloading music. I will continue to use technology in education and social communication while keeping my print literacy values in my mind.

Blog 3 - Lankshear & Knobel

Lankshear & Knobel was a very mind opening article. I learned a lot about old and new ways of thinking when it comes to the internet, during the class discussion. I discovered that there are two types of languages we aquire throughout our life, which are primary and secondary. Primary language is what we learn as children. It is our bottom line assumption and it serves as our norm or default. Secondary language is group recruited.

We also discussed new literacies, which involve "technical stuff," and "ethos stuff." The main discussion throughout the class and of the article was the differences between two mindsets, which are the physical-industrial mindset and the cyberspatial-postindustrial mindset. The first mindset believes that things become more valuable when there is less of them, people are judged as individuals, and space is created for a specific purpose. The second minset believes that things become more valuable as they grow, people work and are judged in groups, and space can be used for many different purposes.

I enjoyed the discussion in class about how older generations react to the internet. They tend to be very specific when it comes to learning things and create step by step lists to help them understand. Today's generation seems to be more open and allows new ways of looking at things and accomplishing tasks.

I am very curious to see how the internet will grow in the future and what changes will be made. I wonder if the internet will start charging to view websites and if other countries will break away from our internet base. There are many possibilities to come in the future.
